Sibling playgroup has started...

Our Wednesday sibling playgroup started today. It was lovely to spend some time getting to know our new families and their younger siblings. The rain stayed away long enough so that the playgroup could play inside, exploring all the wonderful playspaces at John Brotchie and then after storytime with Teacher Rebecca they got to play outside in our lovely garden.

Community Chest IGA Donation

Today the children walked down to IGA at Botany to collect a generous donation from the IGA Community Chest. When you purchase a product with the IGA Community Chest logo a percentage is donated back to the local community.

Thank you for shopping at your local IGA, it has supported our preschool and will be used to support our cooking program.

Buddy Program - John Brotchie and Botany PS

John Brotchie has over 20 children transitioning to Botany PS in 2019. The children met their year 5 buddy at the recent Orientation Morning. The educators at John Brotchie and the teachers from Botany School have been working together to further develop the friendships between the buddies.

This week we visited on Monday to become more familiar with the school, the year 5 buddies took photos of all the important places within the school. On Tuesday we returned back and with the help of the year 5 buddies the children made a "Going to school" book.

This has been a great program and will help to support smooth transitions to school for our preschool children. It also gave the buddies an opportunity to develop their leadership and mentor skills.

Dentist Visit with Dr Emilija

Theodore bought a special visitor today - his mum. Theos' mum is a dentist and she came in to talk the children about our teeth and how to look after them.

Dr Emilija read the children a book all about about dental hygiene and then she demonstrated the technique on how to brush your teeth. Circular movements on the front and side teeth, the top and the back of the teeth. Emilija said it was also important to brush our tongue as sometimes left over food stays on the tongue and this then transfers back onto the teeth. She also reminded us that when we brush our teeth at night we cannot have anything else to eat.

Rebecca asked the children before Emilija came to listen carefully and find out how many times a day do we need to clean our teeth. Maybe ask your child and see if they remembered!

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Girls Love Science

We had a special visitor yesterday at John Brotchie.

Science girl! Also known as Abilene who just happens to be a John Brotchie graduate.

Under scientist Jane’s supervision science girl demonstrated the ‘elephant toothpaste’ experiment for us all to watch. It’s a great example of a chemical reaction mixing hydrogen peroxide with detergent and yeast.

Many of the children made the observation that the reaction is similar to that of the volcano experiment. This led Science girl to tell us about her lemon volcano experiment that the children can do at home with their parents.

Aunty Wendy Visiting Show

Aunty Wendy came to visit John Brotchie. The children perfomed with Wendy, they participated in song, dance, drama and discussions that present contemporary, urban and remote images and ideas about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As always the children enjoyed Wendy's visit and loved participating in songs that they learnt with their educators with the original artist.

Art Show 2018

On Wednesday night families and educators celebrated the openning night of the annual John Brotchie Art Show.

Parents joined us for a night of viewing the art and they had the opportunity to create their own masterpiece. This year the children recreated one of three of Sidney Nolan's masterpieces. They could choose between a Ned Kelly, a Self Portrait or the Harbour Bridge. The children were able to recreate the orginal painting exactly as the artist did or they could recreate it using their own colour choices and added more or less detail. The end results were truely amazing and will hang proudly in the children's homes at the end of the art show.

Art Gallery Excursions

Our excursions to the Art Gallery of NSW have started as part of our Art program.

We take small groups of children on the red bus into the city with a stop at the Archibald Fountain.

Annette takes us for a tour of the gallery stopping at our favourite artists - Sidney Nolan and John Olsen.

Next term the children will be busy working on their own masterpieces for our annual art show.
