Science

Science.... investigationg through experiments

Our science program supports children to develop a range of learning and thinking skills and processes such as experimentation, hypothesising, scientific thinking and helps to foster a love of science. Creating positive and enriching experiences during the early stages of life is the best chance to nurture a lifelong love of science. Science experiences also incorporate literacy including new scientific vocabulary and numeracy as well as social and fine motor skills.

Our educators, with the support of parents who are scientists, have developed a range of experiments that we implement across term 2 and 3 in our outdoor kitchen. The experiments focus on reactions, cause and effect, capillary action, and osmosis.

Our experiments include:

  • Blow it up - https://youtu.be/uVzzHoE6dg?si=4HPS71hTUxYEMo4W
  • Create an explosion! - https://youtu.be/nFZhbEi19M8?si=cqmKLzNjNni1NmD
  • Walking water - https://youtu.be/hGwG--GZEfw?si=vmqwGBy1si2hldlh
  • How do plants take up water - https://youtu.be/sunsJKhRYTo?si=15oJO9sAL90vTxcD

The children work in small or large groups with their educators to conduct these experiments. The educators encourage children to develop scientific thinking skills such as forming hypotheses, making predictions and observations as well as reflective thinking. When making observations educators encourage the children to think about what they see, smell, hear and in most cases feel. The educators introduce new vocabulary related to the science behind experiments.

In the past, our science program has been supported by families. We appreciate any input or ideas from families that have interest or background in science.
